Cumbria Sculptors Group www.cumbriasculptors.com are delighted to be working in partnership with Rydal Hall www.Rydalhall.org to organise and deliver an exciting exhibition of outdoor sculpture this year within the beautiful grounds of this imposing historic house.
Rydal Hall Estate incorporates 40 acres of gardens, woodland, meadows and natural beauty, developed from the 1600’s up to the the present day. This includes the Grade II listed formal gardens in front of the Georgian south wing of the house designed by the renowned landscape architect Thomas Mawson. Below the formal garden lies the Quiet Garden in a secluded area of woodland with ponds and paths leading to the summerhouse and the river which crashes over a series of high waterfalls down a rocky ravine. This contains the Grot, one of Britain’s earliest examples of a viewing station to enjoy the spectacular Rydal falls.
The historic house, which is used as a conference and retreat centre for the Church of England Diocese of Carlisle, is located on the popular walking trail (coffin route) between Ambleside and Grasmere. The estate contains a riverside Tea Room (open 364 day per year in normal circumstances) which showcases work by local artists, holiday cottages and a bunk house and Bishop Bulley Barn used as an indoor exhibition and venue space. The gardens are free to members of the public, with a £5 day parking fee (£2 redeemable on purchases from the Tea Rooms).
Artists have long been inspired by Rydal Hall and the surrounding landscape. A large stone carving by Shawn Williamson and a piece by Josephina de Vasconcellos are sited in the Quiet Garden and a range of sculptures and installations are located throughout the grounds.
Sculptures selected for this exhibition will be sited in and around the Quiet Garden.
The exhibition will be advertised and promoted as widely as possible to stimulate interest and help generate visitor numbers.

Exhibition Dates
Subject to Government relaxation of the current Covid 19 lockdown and subject to any further public restrictions it is proposed that the exhibition will run between 1 May – 30 September 2021.
If the start has to be delayed, alternative dates and a revised installation timetable will be provided once details of lifted restrictions are known.
