Halecat Sculpture Garden Trail 2020
Due to the current situation, the trail which was due to open on 1st May has been postponed until July/August.
A new outdoor art venue for Cumbria.
All sculptors living or with their workshop in Cumbria are invited to apply to exhibit their work in the grounds of Halecat House for the Summer of 2020. This new venture, organised jointly by Halecat Arts & Crafts and Cumbria Sculptors, aims to showcase the best outdoor sculpture made in Cumbria.
Halecat House, Witherslack, is a grand 19th century house currently run as a wedding venue and holiday let. In the grounds are Abi & Tom’s Garden Centre, Witherslack Woodlands sawmill, and existing artist and craft business units and the homes of several of the estate staff. Surrounded by informal gardens and orchards, in this popular family friendly environment, there are a variety of spaces for outdoor sculpture to be shown at its best.
Sculptors are invited to send images of up to 3 pieces of work and may propose new pieces to be made specifically for the exhibition. All work submitted must be made of durable materials and be stable, securely fixed, and safe in an outdoor public environment. It must be child and animal proof and sited in a way that does not impede footpaths or access.
All sculptors must have public liability insurance of £5 million (Artists Newsletter Subscription of £38 is one of the most reasonable). Unfortunately, due to the open nature of the grounds, all sculptures are shown at the sculptors’ risk, in terms of damage or theft. Halecat Estate reserves the right to remove any work that they deem unsafe. We are very grateful to Halecat for the use of their grounds and have promised to restore the environment to how we found it, when the exhibition ends.
The deadline for applications is midnight on 31st January 2020
Selected sculptors will be notified by 14th February
Installation will happen in the last 2 weeks of April – we will timetable this to make sure appropriate help is available as necessary.
The trail will formally open on the 1st May and run until Sunday 13th September.
Work must be removed from site by 30th September.
Any work sold during the exhibition may be replaced with a similar piece, should the buyer want to take it away before the end of the exhibition. We are keen to encourage sales and will promote the trail accordingly.
The trail is being run on a not for profit basis. We will charge 20% commission on sales to cover organisational costs. There is £10 fee for every application.
